Boeing Alumni Tour, Human Spaceflight Exploration Lead Profile, & UArk Food Drive (March 2019)

On March 10, the Puget Sound Alumni Chapter of Tau Beta Pi took a Boeing Factory Tour in Everett, Washington. The event was a TBPi Day celebration at the largest building in the world (by volume) where Boeing assembles planes.

The tour included seeing final assembly of the Dreamliner and the 77X and views from the Future of Flight Aviation Center of taxiing planes going through testing. Vanessa Aponte, Ph.D. (PR A ’96), was profiled by The Denver Channel for her efforts to shatter stereotypes and work on space projects such as the Lunar Gateway. Dr. Aponte is senior manager and IRAD lead at Lockheed Martin where her focus is on human spaceflight exploration.

Her bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in chemical engineering from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. Her Ph.D. in aerospace engineering sciences was earned at the University of Colorado Boulder. Dr. Aponte’s career aspirations include missions to space. She has been a NASA missions finalists a few times already. Click here to read more.

A University of Arkansas food drive in the College of Engineering gathered nearly 2,000 food items to benefit the community. The drive was sponsored by the Arkansas Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, the COE staff council, and in partnership with Ajay and Savita Malshe. An image and news article are available here.

The items went to the Full Circle Food Pantry on campus. Alan Mantooth, Ph.D., P.E. (AR A ’85), is a UArk professor and chief advisor to the TBP AR Alpha Chapter. Dr. Mantooth said, “To see the light, and tears, in Jane Gearhart’s eyes as we donated the goods to the Pantry was all the reward we needed.”
