Retiree Reception, FIU Dean, & Dean Stepping Down (May 2017)

Iowa State University (ISU) recognized Jim C. Hill, Ph.D. (CA G ’62), for his 45+ years as part of the chemical and biological engineering department with a plaque and reception. Dr. Hill is retiring. Read the news article for more information.

Before joining ISU, he worked at NASA’s laboratory for theoretical studies and shell development. He has served as a collegiate chapter advisor to the IA Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi for nearly 20 years, served as a TBP District Director, and was named the Association’s first Outstanding Advisor in 1994. He has also guided the PrISUm solar car racing team since 1989, which has “become one of the most successful and familiar forms of outreach for science and engineering at Iowa State.”

John L. Volakis, Ph.D. (OH L ’78), has been appointed as the dean of Florida International University’s College of Engineering & Computing. Most recently, Dr. Volakis was chair and professor of electrical and computer engineering at The Ohio State University’s College of Engineering. He has also served as the director of the ElectroScience laboratory overseeing nearly 170 people, including 30 faculty members and researchers.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University (OH). According to the news announcement, Dr. Volakis has earned international recognition for introducing hybrid finite element methods widely used in electromagnetics CAD packages.

After six years of service, Ian A. Waitz, Ph.D. (PA B ’86), has announced that he is stepping down as MIT’s dean of engineering. MIT President L. Rafael Reif, Ph.D. (MA B ’73), said: “Under Ian’s leadership, the School of Engineering has never been a stronger magnet for talent. With characteristic energy, optimism, and persistence, he has cultivated a dynamic community that unites the school’s many departments and links engineering to disciplines across MIT.”
