Daniel K. Carder, WV A ’92, is one of three to be profiled as part of West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s Inspiring West Virginians program airing Wednesday, December 21. Carder runs the Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines, and Emissions (CAFEE) at West Virginia University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He was named one of TIME’s “100 Most Influential People for 2016.”
He led a team that developed the world’s first mobile on-board emission testing system. This is what led to detecting that Volkswagen was cheating on emissions tests. The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) is offering a 2017 webinar series “Engineer your Career: Success for Up-and-Coming Faculty and Professionals.” The goal of the four-part series is to “equip students and early career professionals with the knowledge and skills to navigate the processes of finding, securing, and successfully navigating your first position.”

The Colorado School of Mines has announced that it will receive a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to establish a University Transportation Center focused on improving the durability and lifespan of underground transportation. According to Mike A. Mooney, Ph.D. (MO G ’91): “This is the first U.S. DOT funded center at Mines and the first ever U.S. DOT center focused on underground infrastructure.”
Dr. Mooney is a professor at Mines and the Director of the Mines’ Center for Underground Construction and Tunneling.
