Faculty Award, Powerful Females, & Career Achievement

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has announced the winner of the 2016 College of Engineering at Illinois Tau Beta Pi Daniel C. Drucker Eminent Faculty Award. Scott R. White, Ph.D. (MO B ’86), is this year’s recipient of the Drucker Award, one of the most prestigious faculty awards in the College. Dr. White is a professor of engineering and Director of the Center for Excellence in Self-healing, Regeneration, and Structural Remodeling at Illinois.

He currently holds approximately 40 patents, primarily in the field of self-healing polymers and composites, was recognized as the 2014 campus award for Excellence in Graduate Advising, and earned his Ph.D. in engineering mechanics from the Pennsylvania State University. In February, Business Insider published a list “26 of the most powerful female engineers in 2016.” The list includes “female engineers with powerful careers who are leading important technologies at their companies or being pioneers in other ways.” At least three engineers on the list are Tau Bates. They are:

#19. Cynthia Breazeal, Ph.D. – (CA S ’89) CEO of Jibo, Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT, and founder of the Personal Robots Group

#11. Lakecia N. Gunter – (FL G ’95) Chief of Staff at Intel Labs, previous program manager for the Dept. of Defense, and former 7th grade math instructor

#8. Helen Greiner – (MA B ’89) CEO of CyPhy Works, co-founder of iRobot, and previously worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab

This week, Bob Alligood, FL A ’60, will receive the fifth annual Colquitt County Career Achievement Award. The day before the banquet, he will address students at Colquitt County High School. According to the news article, “the Career Achievement Award is designed to honor graduates of the Colquitt County School System who have gone on to achieve significant success in their careers outside the immediate area.”

Alligood received his bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Florida and has since been inducted into the University of Florida Hall of Fame. His professional career included serving as the executive director of the Florida Engineering Society, being elected to the State of Florida Legislature, and as past president and CEO of Reynolds Smith and Hills.
