LA Weekly recently profiled engineer and musician Tristan M. Shone, NY G ’00, who performs as Author & Punisher. Shone works as a mechanical engineer at the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research at the University of California San Diego Health System. He began performing as Author & Punisher in 2005 while enrolled in UC San Diego’s visual arts MFA program.

In the article, he discusses how and why he creates the machines, all fabricated from steel and some weighing 350lbs., that he controls to make his music. “I start with the motion that I want to achieve and I work it out from there,” Shone says. “Some think it all looks too artificially big, but everything that’s on there has a purpose and it’s very much taken from the robotic and optics industry that I work in.”
