On Tuesday, December 9, the Tidewater Big Data Event will take place in Newport News, Virginia at the Newport News Marriott at City Center. The goal of the event is for attendees to “hear real-world Big Data case studies from experts and practitioners from a variety of sectors.” One of the scheduled speakers is George Hsieh, Ph.D. (IL G ’82), professor in the department of computer science at Norfolk State University (NSU).

Prior to joining NSU in 2002, he worked at Bell Laboratories as a member of the technical staff, senior manager, and director on applied research and product development projects. “His current research interests include big data, cloud computing, information security, network security, and critical infrastructure protection.”

The Tau Beta Pi Distinguished Alumnus Award Program, inaugurated in 1993, recognizes alumni who have continued to live up to the ideals of Tau Beta Pi as stated in our Eligibility Code and to foster a spirit of liberal culture throughout their lives after their college years. The program is an opportunity to mark in a fitting manner exemplary performance by alumni. Each winner receives a recognition plaque, is invited to the Convention, and has a $2,000 scholarship named in his or her honor given to a student.

Any chapter or member of Tau Beta Pi may nominate one (or more) alumnus member(s) for the award. A nomination must be submitted by February 1. Selection is made by a committee of Association officers. Read the information sheet and Distinguished Alumnus nomination guidelines for more details.

The Chronicle of Higher Education has posted an opening for the department of mechanical engineering head at Virginia Tech (VT). Click here to read the posting for details on the VT mechanical engineering department, the requirements for candidates, and to submit an application online. Applicant screening will begin January 10, 2015 and will continue until the position is filled.
