The Raytheon Company Board of Directors has elected Thomas A. Kennedy, Ph.D. (OH H ’79), as the next CEO of the company effective March 31, 2014. Dr. Kennedy is the executive vice president and chief operating officer at Raytheon and was also elected to serve on the Raytheon Company Board of Directors.

He will succeed current Raytheon CEO William H. Swanson, CA M ’72, who has been CEO since 2003. Swanson advised the Board of his plans to step down as CEO after his 65th birthday in February. Read the full news announcement


High school students at the Carlisle Extended Learning Program are already gearing up for the 2014 Roller Coaster Competition hosted by the Iowa Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi at Iowa State University. The annual event puts middle school and high school teams in a Rude Goldberg-type design challenge carrying a small metal ball over the roller coaster tracks. This year’s event is scheduled to take place during the current spring semester. Learn more here

Popular Science recently profiled the Lunar Lion team of students from Pennsylvania State University competing in the Google Lunar XPrize competition to safely land on the surface of the Moon. The team worked on their rocket before winter break and are currently seeking crowdfunding to support the building and testing of their prototype design. All funding for the XPrize must be private as part of the competition’s goal to “stimulate the private spaceflight industry.” Read the article for more information
